Sin Kee Bak Kut Teh (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia)

Bak Kut Teh or Ba Kuh Teh is literally translated as Pork Bone Tea. It is a pork rib soup dish, and is predominantly available in Singapore and Malaysia. It is similar to our Nilaga but more earthy in taste because of the herbs used to make the broth. I have heard of a lot of different versions of this dish depending on the country or region, but Sin Kee's versions of  Bak Kut Teh, or BKT for short is what you should try when visiting Kota Kinabalu.

Sin Kee shares the same space with Yipin Roast which is found along the famous Gaya street. It gets crowded during meal times and a few minutes wait may be required before securing a table. However, as soon as the orders are placed, the service is swift and your food will be served in no time. I had a chance to eat at Sin Kee on every visit I had in KK and both times did not disappoint.

Their Bak Kut Teh is full of herbacious flavors that makes it soothing and comforting. A friend who tried different Bak Kut Teh dishes both in Malaysia and Singapore told me that Sin Kee's version is more herb-y, with hints of bitterness from the herbs, compared to the BKTs in Singapore and mainland Malaysia.

Apart from the soupy BKT, Sin Kee also boasts of their unique dry BKT which I also loved! The dry BKT tastes very different from its soupy counterpart, perhaps because of the addition of cuttlefish and okra, but you'd still find the herby flavors from the soupy version.

Dry BKT and the original BKT side by side. Who won? None! Both are deeeeeelish!

The entire spread for that night's dinner.

The dry BKT is unique and really enticing. It would definitely make you take bites continuously. Pair it with white rice and / or fried bread and it would make everything fall into its harmonious places. Oh, note that coconut pudding on the side. Order that too as your dessert. Now that's what you call a perfect dinner!
